Few smells are more pungent and more difficult to remove from your area rug than the smell of pet urine. Not only will there be a lingering odour because of the presence of uric acid, but a pet accident can leave a permanent stain on your rug. Fortunately, the rug cleaning experts from Heirloom® Rug Cleaning offer superior pet urine & odour removal services for customers in Calgary, Edmonton, Lake Louise, and other cities we serve throughout Southern & Central Alberta.
Why is a pet urine stain so problematic? In addition to the smelly uric acid, it also contains urochrome -- yellow pigment. It will discolour your rug and the warm acid is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Once the uric acid breaks down into ammonia and carbon dioxide, the ammonia is highly alkaline and will damage wool and many other rug-making materials quickly.
With a high ph level of 11, the ammonia also damages the dyes and can permanently impact the color of your rug. This cannot be corrected by cleaning. As the acidic urine reacts with ammonia, it will form alkaline salt crystals that absorb moisture from the air and keep your rug damp. As long as the salts are active, they will produce ammonia gas that becomes noticeable when wet. To remedy the odour of dog urine we have tried several things over the years. Finally, we came across a chemist who understood what was necessary to treat fine rugs and how to get rid of the odour. With some fine-tuning, we came up with a winner. We now label it under the name Breakdown. It de-natures the urine and all of the bacteria. In combination with our Heirloom® Rug Cleaning rug washing process, we can remove the odour in almost every rug. It even works on a skunk!
Cat urine is a completely different make-up and many times will require applications of more than one product to eliminate that odour.
When pet urine hits an area rug, it leaves behind a yellow stain. There there are many factors that affect whether this stain will come out or not. Usually, with synthetic carpets, we can remove the stain because dyes in synthetic carpets are usually stable and colourfast. We can also use higher pH products that will strip away the yellow pigments, without damage to the synthetic fibres.
But removing such a stain from wool and other natural fibres is much more sensitive. The sooner we get to the stain, the better the results will be. One of the best things you can do is to rinse the spot with water. Be careful not to over-wet the rug and also be aware of your hardwood flooring as it can also be damaged by the urine and the procedures that you take to remedy the situation.
The best thing that you can do for a pet stain on your carpet is to contact Heirloom® Rug Cleaning ASAP for cleaning and restoration.
