Why is a pet urine stain so problematic? In addition to the smelly uric acid, it also contains urochrome -- yellow pigment. It will discolour your rug and the warm acid is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Once the uric acid breaks down into ammonia and carbon dioxide, the ammonia is highly alkaline and will damage wool and many other rug-making materials quickly.
With a high ph level of 11, the ammonia also damages the dyes and can permanently impact the color of your rug. This cannot be corrected by cleaning. As the acidic urine reacts with ammonia, it will form alkaline salt crystals that absorb moisture from the air and keep your rug damp. We can also use higher pH products that will strip away the yellow pigments, without damage to the synthetic fibres.
But removing such a stain from wool and other natural fibres is much more sensitive. The sooner we get to the stain, the better the results will be.
